Green Screen and Chroma Key Background Remover

Use chroma key when the subject was recorded against a green or blue screen and the editor provides color selection, tolerance, spill suppression, masks, and playback review. It is useful for footage because the selected color can be removed consistently across frames.

AI subject detection is a different method. It estimates the foreground from the image content and can work without a colored screen. For a single JPG or PNG, that may be simpler than selecting a key color.

Light the screen evenly and keep the subject far enough away to reduce green reflections on skin, hair, clothing, and glossy objects. Avoid wrinkles, hot spots, deep shadows, and clothing that matches the screen.

Lock exposure and white balance when possible. A changing screen color makes the key harder to hold from frame to frame.

A still image needs one approved subject edge. Video needs that edge to remain stable while the subject moves, turns, or becomes blurred. Video work may also require tracked masks, keyframes, spill correction, and an export format that fits the compositing workflow.

Start with better capture rather than relying on cleanup alone. Increase the distance between subject and screen, soften the screen lighting, and avoid reflective green surfaces near the subject.

During editing, inspect hair, motion blur, semi-transparent fabric, glass, and the contact area around feet or furniture. Review the composite over the intended background, not only over a checkerboard.
